Secondary School “Vicho Grancharov,” town of Gorna Oryahovitsa

The history of the school is the history of education in Gorna Oryahovitsa. In 1822, Father Zotik opened a school in the monastery’s metochion “St. Trinity”, and in 1827, Father Gerasim laid the foundations for the secular school. After the Liberation, the school became central to the town. In 1937-38, a new two-story building was constructed, with the white carved stone from the old school embedded in its foundation as a symbol and legacy. In the 1970s, the building became three stories high. A new gymnasium and student canteen were added. In 1988, the primary school evolved into a secondary comprehensive school. In the renovated spaces during the 1980s and 1990s, which became studios for visual arts, music, and computer labs, as well as a new music-exhibition hall, young talents showcased their creative abilities. Students and teachers manage to preserve the traditions and legacies of their patron – Vicho Gruncharov, an educator and cultural figure who, in the second half of the 19th century, dreamed and fought for the freedom of the Bulgarian people under foreign rule.
The school teaches students from the preparatory group to 12th grade.
The students of Vicho Grancharov Secondary School constantly win awards and medals.
